Wife of abducted soldier asks for help from Hezbollah wives



NEW YORK - The wife of a kidnapped Israel Defense Forces soldier issued a public appeal Thursday to the spouses of Hezbollah fighters to help her find her husband.

"I am asking, as a wife to a Hezbollah wife, that she can help me to get the message from my husband to me - as a wife to a wife," said Karnit Goldwasser, 30, the wife of Ehud Goldwasser.

Goldwasser told a news conference at the Israeli Consulate in Manhattan that she is convinced her husband is alive and in Lebanon. Ehud Goldwasser, 31, was kidnapped along with Eldad Regev in the July 12 cross-border raid by Hezbollah that sparked the current conflict.


Karnit Goldwasser and her husband's parents also met in New York with members of Congress, and asked them to include a clause mentioning the three kidnapped IDF soldiers - Goldwasser, Regev and Gilad Shalit, who is being held by Hamas - in any prospective United Nations resolution on a cease-fire.

Karnit Goldwasser, who, like her husband, is an environmental engineer, was in New York - which she called her husband's "second love, after me" - on a five-stop tour of the United States that includes Washington D.C, New Jersey, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Her trip is sponsored by the United Jewish Communities, which this week launched a campaign to raise $300 million for humanitarian aid to both Jews and Arabs affected by the violence.

Shlomo Goldwasser, Ehud's father and a ship captain, was in the audience.

"I hope he's alive," the father said after the news conference. But he said there has been "no sign" from his son so far, and "I don't want to find myself surprised."

"If he's alive, he's coping with it," he added.

On Tuesday, Karnit Goldwasser appeared in London to appeal for international support to win her husband's freedom.

Abducted soldier's brother: War failed main goal - to free troops


The brother of captured Israel Defense Forces soldier Eldad Regev said Sunday that the war had failed in its main objective, that of bringing about the release of kidnapped troops, adding that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had promised last week to enter into negotiations over the release of the captive men.

In an interview on Sunday morning, Regev said Olmert did not specify how the negotiations would take shape.

Last week Olmert appointed his friend and former deputy head of the Shin Bet security service Ofer Dekel to coordinate the safe return of three captured IDF soldiers - Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser, who were captured July 12 in Lebanon by Hezbollah, and Gilad Shalit, who was captured June 25 in Gaza by Palestinian militants.

TYRE, Lebanon - Hamid Asan Hasan dropped his wallet, and as he stooped to pick it up he spotted the small round object. Curious, he picked that up too. It exploded and blew off part of his hand.

The Lebanese army passed out leaflets Thursday to warn residents of south Lebanon to beware of just such weapons. It was too late for Hasan, who was injured Sunday, one day before the cease-fire took hold to end fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

"The place is full of unexploded ordnance, shells and mortars," said Chris Clark, program manager for the U.N. Mine Action Coordination center in Tyre.

But that's not the biggest problem, he said.

The most dangerous of the ordnance littering south Lebanon after 34 days of Israeli bombardment are bomblets spewed from cluster bombs packed into Israeli artillery shells, Clark explained.

"Our primary problem is the cluster bombs," he said. The bomblets they spit out are small round explosives that Clark likened to a small grenade. A cluster bomb can be delivered either by air or by artillery shells. In this war, he said, Israel delivered them by shells that exploded before hitting the ground. That sprayed small bomblets over an area half the size of a football field.

Normally, cluster bombs are used against tanks and explode on impact with steel. But in this conflict, Clark said, the shells were fired into areas, both urban and rural, where Israel thought Hezbollah guerrillas might be hiding.

Because the targets were not tanks, many bomblets fell on the ground or asphalt pavement and did not explode.

"This leaves them in an angry state, a very volatile state," said Clark. The bomblets are barely the size of a flashlight battery.
